Though the students are trained in all the general technical aspects of construction and public works, there are possibilities of two different specializations – masonry and carpentry.

Specialization of Masonry

The Masonry Construction specialization provides the opportunity to develop the basic skills of a mason and is designed as an introduction to the trade. Students will focus on basic tool skills, trade materials, safety procedures, and terminology. Emphasis is placed on brick and block skill sets. These skills are developed through hands-on projects, which are preceded by theory lectures and demonstrations. Special emphasis is placed on the appreciation of the beauty and permanence of brickwork and on the development of pride in workmanship.

Students successfully completing the Masonry Construction specialization of this Diploma program find employment in the field as mason tenders and masons with experience and further education as forepersons or superintendents. Many masons are self-employed. iFIM will accompany of successful graduates in getting their first employment in the field as well as in their initial administrative demarches.

Specialization of Carpentry

The specialization of Carpentry Construction is perfect for those who want to learn more than the basics of carpentry. Energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, business skills and entrepreneurship are integral components of this specialization, which is designed to meet the needs of employers looking for carpenters with a solid base across a wide range of applications.

The students learn everything from construction safety and the use of shop equipment to building science, floor and wall framing, exterior finishing and much more. Students are also required to complete two work terms per year, where they apply their skills and knowledge in a real work setting. The successful candidates will be accompanied by iFIM to start their own business or to find their first employment. In both the cases, iFIM will accompany our graduates in their initial administrative démarches.
